How This Break-Even Calculator Works

The break-even point is the number of units you must sell to cover all your costs. It uses your fixed costs, variable cost per unit, and selling price to calculate the exact point where total revenue equals total costs. Selling beyond this point generates profit.

Formula Used

  • Contribution Margin = Selling Price − Variable Cost per Unit
  • Break-Even Units = Fixed Costs ÷ Contribution Margin
  • Break-Even Revenue = Break-Even Units × Selling Price

Real-World Example

A UK retailer has £12,000 in monthly fixed costs (rent, salaries, utilities). Each product costs £8 to buy and sells for £25. The contribution margin is £17 per unit. They need to sell 706 units per month to break even, generating £17,647 in revenue.

Who Should Use This Tool?

  • UK small business owners planning their finances
  • Startups determining pricing and cost structure
  • Market traders evaluating product profitability
